Colonial city and one of the most important sites in México because of its history and monumentality. It is internationally known as the City of the Pink Quarries, because of the materials used in its majestic constructions that still preserve their centennial greatness. Most of these landmarks were built during the Viceroyalty period. Hence, the city has been named a Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
The outskirts of Morelia are sprinkled with lakes and picturesque towns, such as Pátzcuaro, Tzintzuntzan and Santa Clara del Cobre, among others. Of special importance is that the state has the only known Monarch butterfly sanctuary in the world, near Angangueo—a town worth visiting from December to early March. Thanks to its geographical location, Morelia can be easily reached from the region’s main cities, including Mexico City, which is only 315 km (195 miles) away.
